Reporting to the Manufacturing Manager, you will be responsible for  Controlling the engineering spend within the budget of £120,000 per annum or 2% of sales, which ever is lower.  Developing KPIs that accurately reflect the departmental performance both in terms of cost and plant reliability/availability  Developing a multi-tier preventative maintenance plan using machine operators, engineering department personnel and specialist skills where required  Develop the skills within the department and the business in order to improve fault finding and reduce the need for external specialists to a minimum  Develop, for all machinery, a list of recommended spares and suppliers, and work with other engineering managers to develop strategic spares holding for common plant and equipment.  Investigate cost effective ways of controlling consumable spares such as entering bonded stock arrangements with suppliers  Together with the Manufacturing Manager, develop a programme of plant replacement (or refurbishment) based on machine condition, reliability, running costs, usage and best practice  Assist the Manufacturing Manager to develop new products and new techniques for manufacturing  Create and maintain lists of recommended local companies that can undertake fabrication, welding, machining, electrical fault finding, PLC work.  Define operator tool requirements for each process and implement a 5S programme for maintenance  Present the engineering report at the daily production meetings, produce reports and data formally at the monthly management meetings, and create detailed engineering budgets. Necessary skills and experience You must be able to demonstrate a solid engineering background, preferably with a formal engineering qualification, although more importantly, you must possess the knowledge and experience to be able to develop a maintenance system from scratch. You will use your maintenance experience to improve machine availability and to train others in the relevant fault finding and repair techniques. Importantly, the successful applicant must feel as comfortable in a hands-on role, leading by example, as he will developing a computer based engineering and cost control system. You will be well organised, and fully able to manage others, both sub-ordinates and contractors, as well as being financially astute. The role will require you to work flexible hours, dependant upon work load and plant availability. You must be computer literate, and have a good working knowledge of Excel, Word and Access. This role is not for the feint hearted, but it will give someone the opportunity to further develop their skills in a management role.
