The role of the Liaison Nurse is essentially to provide a central point of communication and contact between the Substance Misuse Team and Healthcare.

o Ensure all practice is in accordance with NMC Code of Professional conduct.
o Take responsibility for own continuing professional development and maintain own portfolio in accordance with re-registration requirements.
o Checking that appropriate referrals are made to Substance Misuse following the initial reception health screening process.
o Ensuring services are in accordance with PSO 3550 and other strategic and operational directives and the National Specification for Juvenile Substance Misuse in Custody.
o Processing requests for healthcare related information from Substance Misuse.
o Producing and evaluating, in collaboration with Substance Misuse, care plans for all young persons going through drug or alcohol detoxification.
o Facilitating joint training and awareness events, and assist in training of staff..
o Attending any Healthcare/Substance Misuse liaison meetings.
o Addressing any strategic or operational difficulties in relation to communication between Healthcare and Substance Misuse.
o To participate in the educational induction programme or any other groups as required.
o Be responsible for updating EMIS on behalf of the Substance Misuse Team.
o Assist in the Hep B health promotion and Manage a tier 4 caseload.
o Contribute effectively to the development of the Substance Misuse Team.
o Assist in the smoking cessation policy under the guidance of the Lead Nurse.
o Work with other members of the team ensuring all young people are initially assessed within 5 days and fully assessed within 10 days.
o Actively engage with community resources and GPs, and participate in health promotion.
o To work closely with the prison Dr in assisting in the prescribing of medication and ensuring the safe use of the medication.
o Attend fortnightly Substance Misuse Intervention & Treatment meetings to develop multi-disciplinary team care plans and attend weekly CAMHS meetings.

Essential Skills

o Registered Nurse level 1 RGN or RMN (Dual qualified preferable) with a minimum of 2 years post registered experience.
o Experience and skills of working in a group setting.
o Experience of working in a one-to-one setting.
o Ability to work both individually and as part of a team.
o Self -motivation, and flexible, caring approach to work.
o Excellent communication, assessment and evaluation skills.
o Excellent organisation and record keeping skills.
